you’re not doing anything wrong — the “Add Device” option can be a bit confusing. If the device is already listed but the license expired, you’ll often need to deactivate it first before assigning a new one. Check whether there’s a “Remove” or “Release License” option next to the expired entry. After that, you should be able to reactivate it using one of the free licenses.

By the way, while waiting for your father-in-law’s PC to come back online, you might want to try Escape Road — it’s a surprisingly fun little puzzle-driving game to pass the time!
